Hey y’all, just wanted to put this out to let you know that Fiesta Shorts will be published over at Project Spurs going forward. The first edition of Fiesta Shorts on Project Spurs went live yesterday!1
A little history on this decision
Last fall, local San Antonio sports media legend Mike DeLeon reached out to me about writing for Project Spurs. I was stoked, but also hesitant.
Why? Fiesta Shorts is really fun for me because it’s literally just me sitting down at the computer or on my phone when I’m on the bus, U-Bahn, airport lobby, or wherever, and just spitting out whatever I’m thinking about the Spurs, or something tangentially related to the team.
This ain’t my job, so it’s really just something I do for fun whenever I have time for it throughout the week. So there’s no pressure.
I decided to accept Mike’s offer to write for Project Spurs on a monthly basis, separate from Fiesta Shorts, annnnnd it didn’t really work out for me.
The thought of having to come up with a separate thing for a bigger audience that probably isn’t expecting to read 600 words from some dude named Trace who lives in Germany explain to them why I think Jakob Poeltl is out there HOUSING onion rings from Whataburger in the offseason, that made me feel some dumb amount of pressure that was 100% self-imposed, but real nonetheless.
So I wrote like, three things in the first few months for Project Spurs that were probably fine but I didn’t feel great about. Then I went dormant.
Anyway!
Fast-forward to now and I still want to publish stuff on Project Spurs because they’ve got great people and great content over there, and to be frank, a much bigger audience than I have here. And finally a little lightbulb went off in my head where I was just like, “Hey man fuck it, I don’t really care all that much if the average Project Spurs reader isn’t expecting the dumb shit that I want to write about. Mike wanted you to write for Project Spurs because he liked your voice and your style. And your voice and your style is Fiesta Shorts. Why make this any harder than it has to be in your head?”
And so, the decision was made to move this baby of mine from Substack to the Project Spurs site. I have yet to find a way to subscribe to Fiesta Shorts in Project Spurs so you get these fun emails each time I publish, but if I do find a way, I will absolutely share it.
Thanks for reading me here, I hope you’ll continue reading me on Project Spurs. And of course, please be kind to each other out there.
I wanted to say something about how it’s gonna be the same weird Fiesta Shorts shit you get here but on a different URL but I’m a big ol’ dummy and just realized that I already forgot to include my usual “be kind” sendoff to my first piece over there smh, I promise I’ll include it next time!
